Jesus has risen from the dead...

He is not here, but risen! Their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.
Luke 24:6.11.

Jesus has risen from the dead! What tremendous news! But what was the reaction? "Idle tales", i.e. pure nonsense! Many people react similarly to this message. But when the women told the disciples what they had learned, it was the latter, not unbelievers, who found it difficult to believe.

Let us imagine we were in their situation. Three days ago their Lord and Master, in whom they had put all their hope, had been crucified. Their ideas were dashed. They had thought that Jesus would soon begin His reign as their Messiah. But it now seemed that His enemies were the victors. Had they spent three years of deprivation with Him for nothing? Was it really all over?

However, the women had reported that the message was announced by two witnesses who were angels. So it seemed as if the news was reliable after all.

The apostle Peter set off and ran to the tomb. It was indeed empty, as the women had said. Then he met the risen Lord, whom he had denied two days before. Now he had the opportunity to talk things over with the Lord. That meeting relieved his conscience from the burden oppressing it and set his mind at peace.

A few weeks later there was no thought of doubt:

"With great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 4:33).

Today's reading: Jeremiah 21:1-14 · Luke 24:13-27

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

There is a nature that is of the Earth and there is a nature that is of Heaven. Since the fall of man, the earthly nature of man has become corrupted and therefore is greatly under the influence of the kingdom of Satan. Characteristic features of this nature are: wickedness, moral perversion - sodomy and all sorts of...More
