Living water (3)

The woman said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock? Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 4:11-14.

Living water (3)
The Jewish stranger surprised the Samaritan woman even more. First He had asked her for water; now He told her that He could give her "living water". The woman then began to suspect that the stranger was more important and more powerful than Jacob, her patriarch.

The Son of God explained that none of this earth's water could quench man's thirst. That applies literally and symbolically. But the "living water" that the Son of God was offering is of better quality: it quenches the heart's thirst for ever; and it "springs up into everlasting life".

Jesus Christ was speaking here of the rich blessing that would result from His atoning death on the cross. All who believe on Him obtain the forgiveness of their sins, freedom from Satan's power, eternal life and also the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 7:38.39).

Through the Holy Spirit every believer can now have fellowship with God and with Jesus Christ, His Son. In this fellowship man's unsatisfied longing for true life, love and security finds its fulfilment.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Today's reading: Jeremiah 28:1-17 · Romans 3:21-31

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
