Thoughts on the Gospel of John (87)

Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works I have shown you from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me? The Jews answered him, For a good work we do not stone you, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself God.
John 10:31-33.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (87)
What could have led the Jewish leaders to become so angry that they purposed stoning Him? It was clearly because He had revealed Himself to them in His deity. Chapter 8 of our gospel reports that Jesus' enemies took up stones for a similar cause (ch: 8:59).

"I give them eternal life", the Lord had said regarding His sheep (v. 28). In the scribes' view that was blasphemy, for no human being had authority over eternal life. Finally He had said, "I and my Father are one" (v. 30). It may have been less offensive in their ears, if He had named the Father first, but putting Himself first made it clear that He claimed equality with God, which was for them intolerable.

The fact that the Man Jesus Christ is simultaneously the Son of God is unacceptable for unbelievers. It demands that they pay Him homage, honour and worship Him.

Whoever wishes to be convinced of the spotless life of Jesus, His unparalleled humility and love, His untiring beneficial work and unlimited power should read the gospels. There we find the works of His Father that the Son of God alone could carry out.

Let us note particularly: "He who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him" (John 5:23).

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Jeremiah 29:15-32 · Romans 4:9-15

THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is one thing to receive the anointing and another to keep growing on it. There are people who had the anointing, but today, everything has virtually ebbed out. It is possible to connect with the Holy Spirit and to continue to flow in the power of the anointing even at increasing levels. If this is your desire,...More

TOUCH NOT

In today's Bible reading, while David and his men were away, the Amalekites invaded Ziklag, defeated the city and set it on fire, after which they took members of their families - wives, sons and daughters as captives. When they returned and saw the situation of Ziklag, David and his men were really distressed,...More
