God is love

We have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love.

To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge.

1 John 4:16; Ephesians 3:19.

God is love
Who is God? This question is both essential and unfathomable. We cannot answer it ourselves. God revealed Himself to the first humans as the supreme omnipotent God, close to them, but holy and too profound for the human mind. He revealed Himself to Moses as the One who is eternal. In the New Testament He is revealed as the Father of those who believe in Jesus. And towards the end of the New Testament we find these great, yet touching words: "God is love".

It can be said of a human being that He shows or receives love, but it could never be said that he is love. Now of God, the apostle John says not only that He loves (even if that is true), but that He is love itself.

God's love is not an abstract concept, it is an active love, a love that gives itself. It is in Jesus that we have come to know the love of God through the Son of God coming to earth and becoming Man, so as to be able to approach us. Jesus "went about doing good" (Acts 10:38). Then He was willing to die on a cross to free us from our wrongdoings, our sins.

In this Christianity is unique: God has revealed Himself to us in Jesus, the Son of God, who became man to save us.

What was it, blessed God, led thee to give thy Son,
To yield thy well-beloved for us by sin undone?
‘Twas love unbounded led thee thus
To give thy well-beloved for us.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 34:1-22 · Romans 7:1-6

Many years ago, at the first time I was leaving Nigeria for overseas, I was on my way to Canada to attend a world conference of Applied...More
