How could we ever thank God...

Bless the LORD, o my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, o my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
Psalm 103:1-4.

How could we ever thank God sufficiently for all the good He has done in our lives? Like David, the writer of the Psalm, we might recount much, when we think of all God's goodness towards us day by day, month by month, year by year.

"Who forgives all your iniquities." That is the greatest proof of His love. Nothing is so important, nor can make me so joyful than the certainty that God has forgiven all my sins and will never refer to them again.

"Who heals all your diseases." In all physical and mental troubles I have experienced God's nearness. Not that He has kept every illness from me; nor did He remove the handicap from which my daughter suffers. But He gives the courage and strength to endure every situation joyfully with Him.

"Who crowns you with loving kindness." Looking back over my life, I see the most striking evidence of this as a "crown" of goodness and mercy. God has never left me in the lurch. His mercy has always helped me. Moreover, He has shown me His goodness time and time again without my ever giving Him a reason for doing so.

David knew God's goodness, but he also knew his own forgetfulness. So he urged himself not to overlook the benefits he received from God, but rather to praise Him wholeheartedly. That is the greatest prerequisite for a happy life!

Today's reading: Jeremiah 35:1-11 · Romans 7:7-13
