Thoughts on the Gospel of John (89)

Therefore they sought again to seize him, but he escaped out of their hand. And he went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptising at first, and there he stayed. Then many came to him and said, John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this man were true. And many believed in him there.
John 10:39-42.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (89)
The works that Jesus did are the unmistakable proof that here a Person of the Deity was acting out of love and authority. God the Father is in the Son, and the Son is revealed as being one with the Father in His essential being, in His thoughts and in His affectionate intentions.

Jesus' opponents dropped the stones they held but retained their hatred. They wanted to take Him captive - for the third time (ch. 7:30.32.44). But the Son of God Himself would decide when the appropriate time had come. That was not yet to be; so He returned to the place where He had made His first public appearance as the promised Messiah, by the Jordan.

John the Baptist had been dead for nearly three years. Yet his testimony had been so impressive that many Jews still remembered him.

John was the last of the prophets of the era of the law. Then, as is always the case at the end of a biblical era, miracles were not the order of the day. But John's witness of Christ was credible and more effective than miracles.

We are at the end of the Christian era and need not expect God to work through signs and wonders by human beings. Christians today should therefore take John the Baptist as an example and take care that what they say about Christ is equally true.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Jeremiah 38:1-13 · Romans 8:26-30

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
