The day of small things

Who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.
Zecharaiah 4:10.

The day of small things
A number of Jews returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian captivity and rebuilt the temple that Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed. But their work was paltry and insignificant when compared with what Solomon had built. With today's verse from the Bible God sent an encouraging message to those employed on the task through Zecharaiah.

We, too, are living in a day that can be described as one of small things. So the question, "Who despises the day of small things?" is relevant for us, too. The answer is: the person whose attention concentrates too often on great achievements. Now God does not overlook the apparently inconspicuous efforts of His children.

The expression, "these seven", refers to the stone with seven eyes in Zechariah 3:9. These eyes illustrate the fact that God sees everything: nothing escapes His eyes. What had He noticed in Zerubbabel's case? The plumb line with which he checked that the wall was vertically true. He didn't simply build as he thought fit. He attended to precision.

If we wish to serve the Lord, we do well to keep to the Word of God. Just as the plumb line always indicates accuracy, so, too, the Bible shows us the correct course.

It was a joy for God to observe the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand. And He rejoices when He sees our intention to follow His Word as our yardstick and not stray from faithful work on the house of God.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 40:1-12 · Romans 9:14-29
