Simply believe

To him who does not work but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
Romans 4:5.

Simply believe
God makes one thing about the human race absolutely clear in the Bible: "They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one" (Romans 3:12). That suffices for Him to pronounce everyone guilty before Him. Do I accept this judgment as applying to me personally? Do I admit my sins and my lost state?

A further verse in the Word of God states: "By the works of the law no flesh shall be justified" (Galatians 2:16). Good deeds to obtain God's favour will counter guilt for no-one. Do I believe this truth and have given up my own efforts to satisfy our holy God by means of an honourable, helpful life?

Because God loves us, He has shown us in the Bible how we can be saved. His Son became Man to sacrifice His life on the cross as the ransom for all who believe on Him to get things right with God. In Acts 16:31 it says: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." Am I prepared to put my trust in the Redeemer? Do I believe that His death cancels the debt of my guilt?

The idea of self-redemption motivates many to lead a decent life or undertake charitable works. But this is not the way to heaven. Humble faith in God and His Word alone brings us into a happy, satisfying relationship with Him.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 52:1-16 · Romans 16:1-16
