The Spirit of God in the believer

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:30.

The Spirit of God in the believer
Ever since we have believed in the Lord Jesus and his work of redemption, the Holy Spirit has dwelt in us. The apostle Paul asks us an urgent question in connection with this fact "Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). Because our body is the dwelling place of the Spirit of God, we cannot simply behave and act as we please. Our conduct in our whole life must be in accordance with God and His Word.

Through our self-will and sin we grieve the Holy Spirit, so that His working becomes limited. This then has serious consequences for our life of faith:

The Spirit cannot fill our hearts with peace and joy, because we rebel against the will of God and our fellowship with the Father is disturbed.

If we insist on going our own way or carrying out our own ideas, we cannot possibly experience the leading of the Holy Spirit in our everyday life.

Instead of enhancing the Person of the Lord Jesus for us by means of the Word of God, the Spirit must make us aware of our deplorable state so as to bring about our restoration.

Let us therefore do all in our power not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Although He will never abandon us (cf. John 14:16), we shall suffer considerable loss spiritually, if we restrict Him in His working for our blessing.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 52:17-34 · Romans 16:17-27

However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
