The working of the Holy Spirit

Having believed, you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.

In the power of one Spirit we have all been baptised into one body, and have all been given to drink of one Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13; 1 Corinthians 12:13 (New Darby Version)

The working of the Holy Spirit
After His resurrection Christ returned to heaven. On the Day of Pentecost what He had promised was fulfilled: the Holy Spirit came to earth to dwell in believers thereafter. It happened under particularly conspicuous circumstances. It was the beginning of Christianity, the transitional period in which God bore "witness both with signs and wonders" (Hebrews 2:4) that confirmed God's new work until the doctrine of Christianity was fully revealed and the Word of God completed (cf. Colossians 1:25.26).

When someone puts his faith in Christ today and receives the Holy Spirit, there are no visible external signs. It is inner working: "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Romans 8:16). He brings about the consciousness in our own spirit that we are children of God.

The Holy Spirit guides believers on their life's pathway, so that they do the will of God with insight: "As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God" (Romans 8:14).

Finally, it is the Holy Spirit who has joined all believers together in one spiritual body whose head is Christ, the glorified Lord in heaven. They are filled with one and the same Spirit who dwells in each one individually. Therefore their body is "the temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 6:19).

Today's reading: Lamentations 1:1-11 · Psalms 42:1-6
