Morality and the majority

Enter by the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil.

Matthew 7:13; Isaiah 5:20.

Morality and the majority
A philosopher of the early 20th century defined morality as "what pleases the majority". Solshenitzin, the famous Russian champion of liberty, is indignant at such a conception. "In such conditions," he wrote, "evil can become good, if it gains a majority, and good can become evil if it is in the minority."

A slackening of morals is the consequence of such a view; it opens the gate to the worst excesses and eventually succeeds in abolishing any distinction between evil and good and silences the conscience.

The Word of God leaves no doubt as to what awaits humanity if it rejects any reference to God. It proclaims that in the last days men will be egoists, proud, without natural affection and without any respect for moral values (2 Timothy 3:2; Jude 18). It mentions the fire from heaven that struck Sodom so as to announce judgment on those who become guilty of despising divine instructions (Jude 7).

This pretence that a large number can dictate morality reminds us that the road leading to judgment is broad and spacious, and that many take it. Do you intend following that crowd? Rather seek the narrow pathway that leads to life. There are fewer travellers on it, and it is the only way: it is Jesus Christ, who said,

"I am the way, the truth, and the life; no-one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).

Today's reading: Judges 1:16-26 · 2 Corinthians 1:8-14

Given modern trends and need for details, most institutions have various books in which records are kept and can be retrieved in years to come. Every...More
