“I do my best” (1)

We conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
Romans 3:28.

"I do my best" (1)
"Are you saved?" a believer once asked the person opposite him. "I do my best", was the reply. - "So do I", answered the Christian, "But not to be saved, but because I am saved."

Many religious people think they can be saved by means of good works, their own efforts. They realise that, as they are, they cannot meet with God's approval. They do not belong to the crowd of indifferent persons who pay no heed to God or the question of eternity. Yet we human beings feel the urge to satisfy God in our own way. That has always been the case. In some heathen religions it was believed that sacrificing one's own children could "reconcile the deity".

The error here is that God does not need reconciling. He is not man's enemy, but we humans live in rebellion against Him. If God occasionally intervenes in the life of individuals or whole nations, then He does so in order to wake us up and remind us of His rights over us. As a just Judge He must condemn evil, but He is never against us.

It is we who must be reconciled with Him. That can only happen, if a profound change takes place in our hearts. This change begins by our confessing our sins before God and receiving forgiveness and peace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, His Son.

(to be concluded tomorrow)

Today's reading: Judges 3:12-31 · 2 Corinthians 3:7-18

FALSE PROPHETS AND THEIR PROPHECIES-THE FALSE PROPHET

And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the...More

EVERYONE NEEDS A MIRACLE

Some years ago, I was invited to be the guest speaker at a garden party in an exclusive, highbrow residential area. Because I arrived at the venue quite early, I was made to sit for a while in the house of my host. The house was an exquisite parade of wealth and splendour. I had never seen such brazen display of...More

PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS

Read:
that when he cried to the Lord, the Lord healed him. This is another testimony of someone who believed in the God that answers prayers. May prayer for someone using this devotional is that as you cry unto God today, He will answer you as He answered Hannah, Jabez and Elijah in Jesus'...More

The bankruptcy that saves

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - for the redemption of their souls is costly, and it shall cease for ever.

You were not redeemed with silver or gold from your aimless conduct but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and...More
