The trials of which the...

You are those who have continued with me in my trials.
Luke 22:28.

The trials of which the Lord Jesus spoke here He encountered as true man. And His disciples had a share in them. They truly experienced privations, hunger, fatigue and earthly poverty. With their Lord they also endured disfavour, contempt and persecution from their own people. The psalms especially give us some insight into the way the Lord Jesus painfully felt suffering and these trials. How comforting it was that His disciples loved Him, supported Him and persevered with Him!

Today it is still possible to endure trials with the Lord. Sufferings such as the Lord had in the service of His God, have continued till today. We often think that He supports us in all our trials, and that gives us much comfort. But have we ever thought how heartening and well-pleasing it is for Him if we persevere with Him in His trials? We have in mind the kind of trials that He experienced and which we brave for His sake, whether they are privations or remarks that hurt.

Our merciful and faithful High Priest can "sympathise with our weaknesses" for He "was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). He is Himself afflicted in all our affliction (cf. Isaiah 63:9). His fellowship with us in the circumstances of our life is constant. And in so far as we bear suffering and trials for His sake we experience "the fellowship of his suffering" (Philippians 3:10).

Today's reading: Judges 6:14-27 · 2 Corinthians 6:1-10

HAZARDING LIVES FOR MISSIONS

Within the space of a few years after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel about Him had reached Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and all the great cities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
