Today's reading: Numbers 1:47-2:16

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Matthew 5:3-6

The beatitudes fulfilled in Christ (1)
The beatitudes are motivating words that Christ spoke to His disciples who followed Him, wanting to learn from Him. The Lord explained the characteristics that should mark them out. So it is not surprising that these characteristics can be found in Christ to perfection. A comparison with other passages of the Bible confirms the fact.
Christ was poor and humble in spirit. "This mind was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant" (Philippians 2:5-7).
He mourned. "As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, if you had known .. the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes" (Luke 19:41-42). "When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept" (John 11:33-35).
He was meek. "Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart" (Matthew 11:29).
He hungered after righteousness. "His disciples urged him, saying, Rabbi, eat. But he said to them, I have food to eat of which you do not know My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work" (John 4:31, 32, 34).
