These verses describe how the Lord...

He will not quarrel nor cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and smoking flax he will not quench, till he sends forth justice to victory.
Matthew 12:19.20.

These verses describe how the Lord Jesus Christ acts by means of a quotation from the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah had foreseen that the Messiah would be different from the great names of this world. And how his prophecy was fulfilled!

Jesus undertook God's purpose with complete dedication, however, not with any self-promotion, but in constant, quiet service. He did not proclaim His message vociferously, like a market crier selling his wares without any interest in people. Jesus' activity was marked by love and care, gentleness and humility (cf. ch. 11:28-30).

The Son of God will soon return to earth to establish His kingdom of peace. Then righteousness and justice will reign on earth. But until then there will be much that is seen as unrighteousness and oppression even in states where law and order are established.

How pleasing it is that Christ as the Saviour and Redeemer serves all who feel weak and shattered! He notices the helpless whom others by-pass. The "bruised reed" and "smoking flax" find salvation and help with Him. Such illustrative expressions describe the misery that has entered the world through sin and oppresses people. Jesus' invitation, "Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28) applies to all who suffer from this burden.

Today's reading: Judges 14:14-15:8 · 2 Corinthians 12:16-21
