The Trinity

Make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:19.

The Trinity
While heathen nations generally worship a multitude of gods, both in the Old and the New Testaments the Bible teaches faith in the one true God (Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Timothy 2:5).

God teaches us in the Bible that He is in essence One, but He has revealed Himself in three Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Christians therefore speak of the Trinity, an expression that, in fact, does not occur in the Bible; nor is the word "person" ever used for God. However, we find that in many places that God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, consciously think, speak and act and have their will.

In the Old Testament the Trinity of the Deity is already intimated although not yet revealed (e.g. Genesis 1:26; Psalm 11:1; Isaiah 9:5). When Jesus Christ was baptised in the Jordan, however, all three Persons of the Godhead appeared together (cf. Matthew 3:16.17). The command that Jesus gave His disciples to baptise in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit is correspondingly formulated.

The New Testament states that the Father sent the Son into the world and that the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit (cf. John 3:17; 14:26; 15; 26; 16:7). We should not deduce that there is any difference in rank in the relationship within the Godhead. It suffices to know that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all God (cf. John 1:1.2; 2 Corinthians 3:18).

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 1:1-54 · Psalms 78:54-64
