Simon Peter denies Jesus

He (Peter) denied him saying, Woman, I do not know him. Man, I am not. Man, I do not know what you are saying. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Luke 22:57-62.

Simon Peter denies Jesus
Jesus had warned Peter; "I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know me" (v. 34). Then the Lord went to the Mount of Olives with His disciples and prayed intensely in the garden of Gethsemane. Meanwhile the disciples were sleeping. Then Judas came and betrayed Him. The Lord was arrested and taken to the high priest's house. Peter followed the crowd, at first "at a distance" (v.54), then he ventured into the lion's den and sat down "among them", probably with his heart beating. Suddenly things became dangerous for him: people were talking about him. "This man was also with him." So they spoke to him, "You also are of them." Fearing for his life, Peter denied his Lord - three times, as was prophesied.

Then Jesus turned round and looked at Peter. Maybe His look showed sadness; it certainly revealed His love nevertheless. When Peter turned away from his Lord, the Lord turned to him. That look touched Peter's heart and made him shed tears of regret over his failure.

The Lord's look also reminded Peter of His encouraging word: "When you have returned to me, strengthen your brethren." Peter should not despair: it was not the end - a return was possible.

Could the Lord now be looking at someone who has something to confess and put in order?

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 3:1-24 · Psalms 79:1-7

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
