The barometer (1)

We have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in you hearts.
2 Peter 1:19.

The barometer (1)
For extensive weather forecasts weather satellites are indispensable. We all know the impressive photos of hurricanes in the North Atlantic that make it possible to warn of dangers for shipping and cities in good time.

The large sailing ship Hyacinth, on the other hand, on its way to the island of Barbados in 1831 had only a barometer available. The sea was calm and the sky cloudless. So Captain Oldrey was astonished when he looked at the barometer in his cabin. It had suddenly dropped considerably, indicating "storm". In his concern he went up on deck to observe the sky and the sea for indications. But there was not the slightest sign of a change in the weather.

Oldrey consulted his officers, who supposed the barometer to be defective. The experienced captain, however, feared the hurricanes in that region and took the warning seriously. He had the sails taken down and all loose or movable objects secured to preserve both ship and crew from damage or harm. Two hours later the storm reached the Hyacinth, but it withstood its fury.

For our voyage through life God has not left us without a "barometer". It can be found in the prophetic word. The prophets of ancient times, then Jesus Christ and finally His apostles have left us countless indications to enable us to recognise the "signs of the times" and take the necessary precautions.

(to be concluded on Thursday)

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 6:1-32 · Psalms 80:9-19

OFFENDED IN CHRIST?

The Christian race must be run with lots of patience or else it will be bungled midway. If you are inpatient with Gods timing, you will not only get into trouble but may not be able to finish the race. A good number of backsliders derailed from their heavenly track because of impatience. In Matthew 11:6 Jesus...More

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And...

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.
(Genesis 18:1)

The spiritual elevation of Abraham in Genesis 18 and 19 is something very peculiar. He seems...More

THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is one thing to receive the anointing and another to keep growing on it. There are people who had the anointing, but today, everything has virtually ebbed out. It is possible to connect with the Holy Spirit and to continue to flow in the power of the anointing even at increasing levels. If this is your desire,...More

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More
