This happened at our bookstall. The woman who had just been given a calendar for the next year was no stranger to me. Every year she came to fetch one.

She radiated happiness and clearly wanted to tell me something. She had been reading our calendar for years. She kept it concealed in a drawer in the kitchen, so that her husband did not discover that she read a Christian calendar. If he found out, he would turn her out, she thought. The previous year she had been converted and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour. She wanted to tell her husband, but she didn't know how to.

A few weeks later she was about to fetch the calendar out, as she did every morning, but her husband was sitting there with the calendar in his hands. He wanted to read it, but didn't dare to tell his wife: she would turn him out!

We sensed her joy that God had shown her and her husband that their game of hide-and-seek was over. They could confess their faith to each other. The truth of today's verse above was confirmed!

"With the heart one believes unto righteousness." How true this is! It is a personal matter between an individual and God. We are justified before God through faith in Christ and His atoning sacrifice (Romans 3:21-26).

"With the mouth confession is made unto salvation." If genuine faith in Jesus Christ is present in the heart, it will find its expression for the salvation and blessing of the believer himself and for his neighbourhood.
