How many people whom we meet are tired...

Come to me, all you who labour, ... and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28.

How many people whom we meet are tired, even exhausted or discouraged. And it is not just because of overwork or stress. They have lost any desire to go on living. In this present age the number is exceedingly high. It was such people that Jesus had in mind when He said, "Come to me all you who labour, ... and I will give you rest."

Some are about to be divorced and wonder about their future. To each of them this call from Jesus goes out: "Come to me, I will give you rest."

There are the sick with their pains, their helplessness and their despair. Their doctors are at their wits' end; no-one can help them. But Jesus can! He has promised rest to all who come to Him. He knows what pain is; He suffered torment on the cross. He understands when troubles overwhelm us. He feels deeply, is sympathetic and will help us through.

Things are especially difficult for those who suffer from depression. Fear and worry have robbed them of all hope and joy. To such Jesus also calls, "Come to me!" In the garden of Gethsemane He sensed consternation and fear in His soul in face of His death on the cross with all its terror. But He experienced His Father's comfort. And with that Father He will make all acquainted who come to Him with their burden.

Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst. The one who comes to me I will by no means cast out" (John 6:35.37).

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 4:1-22 · 2 Timothy 2:1-6

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
