Stations in the life of Jesus: (6) Emmaus

Two of them were travelling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know him.
Luke 24:13-16.

Stations in the life of Jesus: (6) Emmaus
Two of Jesus' disciples were returning downcast to their home village of Emmaus, some 7 miles from Jerusalem. All their hopes that the Messiah would shake off the foreign rule of the Romans had been dashed, for, at the instigation of the Jewish supreme court of justice, none other than the hated Romans had crucified their Messiah Jesus outside the gates of Jerusalem.

Then Jesus Himself joined them and accompanied them without being recognised. It was true enough that the Lord Jesus had voluntarily sacrificed His life on the cross of Calvary, so that we might be saved through faith in Him. But He had not remained in the grave. He had risen again and was alive! The New Testament reports several encounters of the resurrected Lord with many of His disciples (1 Corinthians 15:6).

Starting with His question: "Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?", the Lord Jesus explained to those two disciples the Old Testament scriptures that had announced His sufferings, death and resurrection long before. The time flew past, as He spoke. Meanwhile it was evening, and they arrived in Emmaus where they prepared a meal, during which Jesus revealed Himself and immediately disappeared. What joy for them to have experienced His company and His teaching! They could not contain it for themselves alone, but returned to Jerusalem at once to proclaim their news.

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 13:1-12 · Revelation 2:18-29

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
