The Child in the manger has for...

There is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour who is Christ the Lord. You will find a babe,...lying in a manger.
Luke 2:11.12.

The Child in the manger has for centuries attracted interest and sympathy in Christendom and throughout the whole world. This miracle has aroused feelings of security and peace wherever family life is respected in our present world.

The Christmas story, as reported in Luke's gospel, is one of the best known biblical accounts. There can be no doubt about its beauty. But how relevant is it to us when we read it or hear it? When God says that a Saviour has been born for us in the Person of Jesus Christ, the question is: who needs a Saviour? The answer is simply: the lost!

This point decides everything. Not only the shepherds were lost, but all others, too, including you and me. Through sin everyone leads his life initially apart from God. How many people associate the word "Saviour" with Jesus, but fail to realise its impact on themselves, if they still belong to this lost world!

We can speak of the Christmas message only if we are also reminded of the cross, where the Lord Jesus died to atone for the sins of those who put their trust in Him. Without faith in Him and His atoning sacrifice none can be saved. Without the cross the story of the Child in the manger is sadly nothing more than romanticism.

Jesus partook of "flesh and blood, that through death he might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage" (Hebrews 2:14.15).

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 33:1-11 · Revelation 19:11-21

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
