“Oh time, stand still!”

There is a time to be born, and a time to die.

Because I live, you will live also.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2; John 14:19.

"Oh time, stand still!"
With this line the French poet, Lamartine, expressed what many of us may have dreamt of in moments of great joy: time standing still.

Our life is bound to time. Even when we sleep, time does not cease to slip by: we are its prisoners. God's creature, man, is subject to this constraint on earth. The Creator of heaven and earth, the Lord God Himself, has neither beginning nor end.

Man is born and lives on earth, and if death terminates our earthly life, the Bible tells us that it is not the end of our existence. Can we envisage passing from life on earth to that beyond calmly? At death Christians enter the presence of Jesus, where they await the resurrection to eternal life. Jesus said to the criminal about to die, "Today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). When you close your eyes for the last time, will you also be with Jesus, who said, "I am the resurrection and the life"? (John 11:25).

A rich man died and was buried. He had lived sumptuously, but after dying he found himself in a place of torment. That will be the fate of all who neglect settling the matter of their sins in time. Read Luke 16, vv. 19-31.

Every second that passes brings us inexorably nearer the end of our earthly life. If you have believed in the Lord Jesus, you have a glorious hope: "for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 4:14). Being with Jesus now and for evermore, that is our joy!

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 35:1-15 · Revelation 21:1-14

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
