Saviour, Comforter and Preserver

For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
Psalm 116:8

Saviour, Comforter and Preserver
In today's short verse from the Psalms, God is introduced to us in three ways.

He is our Saviour. Because of the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus, God has saved us from our lost condition and brought us to Himself. As saved or redeemed, we are now His beloved children. Every day He cares for us. In Psalm 68:19 we read about this: "Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation!" Again and again, we come into situations where we experience God and our Lord as Saviour and Helper.

He is our Comforter. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 it says, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation." There are no circumstances in which He cannot comfort us. But sometimes we are excessively sad and think to ourselves: "If only He had made it less difficult!" Then we are in danger of closing ourselves off to His consolation.

He is our Preserver. The journey of faith does not always go smoothly. The enemy sets snares to bring us down. Moreover, the path of following the Lord is narrow. It requires our full attention so that we do not make any missteps or even go astray. Our God and Father knows about these dangers and wants to protect us from falling. That is why we need to stay close to Him.

Today's reading: Numbers 31:1-24 · Matthew 16:13-20

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
