Single-minded discipleship

To him (Caleb) and his children I am giving the land on which he walked, because he wholly followed the Lord.
Deuteronomy 1:36

Single-minded discipleship
Caleb was one of the twelve men who had passed through Canaan for 40 days. During this time, he had come to know and appreciate the Promised Land. He also believed that God would give this land to the people of Israel as their possession. He held fast to this belief during the year-long wilderness journey. Shortly before the people crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan, God gave him a good testimony: Caleb had wholly followed the Lord!

This does not mean that Caleb had lived perfectly. No, this only applied to Jesus Christ who was the only person who did not commit sin. The meaning of "wholly following" is a living with one purpose.

Caleb never lost sight of the goal God had for him in the wilderness. With every fibre of his heart, he was drawn to Canaan where the Lord would give him an inheritance. Trusting in what God had promised, Caleb waited to enter the Promised Land. Returning to Egypt or staying in the wilderness was out of the question for him.

Through faith in the Lord Jesus, we have been saved for heaven. Our eternal home is there: that is where the Lord wants to lead us.

This raises the question: Are we as purposeful as Caleb? Or do we let what the earth or the world offers us keep us from wholehearted discipleship?

Today's reading: Numbers 36:1-13 · Matthew 18:21-35

(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More
