Today's reading: Numbers 16:1-22

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
Luke 6:27

In the 2nd century A.D., the philosopher Athenagoras found faith in Christ in Athens. Because the Christians rejected the many gods of ancient mythology as well as the cult of the emperor, they were constantly exposed to accusations and persecution in the Roman Empire. For this reason, Athenagoras sent a "petition for Christians" to the emperor Marc Aurel in the year 177 A.D. Here is an extract from it.
"Judges pass sentence on other accused persons only when their guilt has been proved. With us, on the other hand, they do not examine whether the accused has committed any wrong; they are endangered by the term "Christian", as if this in itself were a wrongdoing. "
"In the same way as others enjoy impartiality, we, too, do not expect to be hated and punished just because we are Christians. How can a mere name make us evil? An examination should ensue after every accusation made against us. Then those pronounced innocent of the accusation should be freed and those guilty punished, not for the name Christian (for no Christian is bad, unless he is a hypocrite), but for the wrong done."
"You can find among us uneducated people, artisans and elderly mothers unable to present the case of their doctrine verbally, but who prove the usefulness of their principles through deeds. They do not utter things learned by heart, but perform good deeds: when hit, they do not hit back, when robbed, they do not take legal action, they give to those who ask and love their neighbour as themselves."

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
