Swimming against the current

Do not be conformed to this world.
Romans 12:2

Swimming against the current
In today’s verse, the “world” refers to human society that seeks happiness without God. It rejects His Son, Jesus Christ, and pursues goals that completely exclude the living God. Before our conversion, we also belonged to this godless system. But since we personally believed in the Lord Jesus, our relationship to the world has changed. We no longer belong to it, although we are still in it. In His prayer to the Father the Lord expresses this fact: “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world” (John 17:16).

As disciples who follow the Lord Jesus on the way to heaven, we have very different goals from the world. We now want to please God and place our lives at His disposal. We ask for His will in our lives and have the desire to obey Him. This Christian orientation of life is completely opposed to the world’s ideas of goals and achievements.

Consequently, as Christians, we often have to swim against the current of the world’s views and opinions. This is not easy, because in doing so we are met with incomprehension or even mockery from our fellow human beings. It requires strength of faith to walk this path of faithfulness to God and His Word. If we humbly trust the Lord Jesus every day, He will help us to endure the opposition of a world hostile to God.

Today’s reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-16 · 1 Thessalonians 2:13-20
