“Who loved me”

Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.
Mark 10:21

“Who loved me”
The funeral is over. People are leaving the cemetery. Relieved, some move quickly away from this place where death always delivers an unmistakable sermon; others walk away in silent grief.

At the gate of the cemetery someone offers flyers with the title, “Who loved me”.

A young man in an adventurous getup passes through the gate with the mourners. The black undershirt – his only outerwear – reveals his richly tattooed arms. The left upper arm is adorned with a devil’s head.

This young man is also offered a flyer, and he looks at the title.

“It’s Jesus Christ who loves you,” he is told.

“I don’t need that one,” the tattooed man replies firmly.

“Listen, the one you have there on your upper arm doesn’t love you!” “Yes, he does,” the young man replies with a mocking smile. “He loves me.”

The Christian shudders, “He loves you? … Yes, like the murderer loves his victim!” The mocking smile on the lips of his counterpart disappears. He becomes quite serious.

The believing man continues, “But the one written about here really loves you. He loves you just as you are. It is the Lord Jesus. Without Him, you are lost. But He died for you on the cross. He wants to save you and can save you. Please!” Then the person addressed takes the flyer and silently walks away.

Today’s reading: 2 Samuel 12:1-31 · 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
