A Saviour for sinners

Jesus answered and said to them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.
Luke 5:31–32

A Saviour for sinners
The man knew that his illness was incurable. Maybe he had a few years to live, maybe only a few months. In his thoughts, his life passed by him like a film. He was aware that he had not always lived in a right way, although people thought he was a decent person.

The longer he thought, the more clearly he saw how God judged his life. That worried him. There was actually nothing good left. His good deeds, of which he had been so proud in silence, melted away like snow in the sun. How often had he judged other people and thought he was better than them. But now he felt worse and worse about himself. Finally, he saw himself as a lost sinner who could not stand before God.

At this point, today’s Bible verse helped him. He knew that a doctor is there for the sick. They need only call upon him to seek his help. So also, Jesus Christ came to earth because sinners needed Him. He died for them on the cross so that they would not have to be lost. Now all who recognise themselves as sinners may call upon the Lord Jesus. Then He saves them.

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). This Bible verse gave the sick man rest.

Today’s reading: 1 Kings 3:1-28 · John 4:43-54

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

KEEP YOURSELF HUMBLE

Several years ago, I was on a visit to a parish of our church in Ilesha (a town in southwest Nigeria) on the same day that a Bible Study was to take place. Because I wanted to be blessed, I sat down in the congregation waiting for the Bible study teacher to commence the lesson for the day. However, an overzealous...More
