Rooted and grounded

That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love …
Ephesians 3:17

Rooted and grounded
In today’s Bible verse, the apostle uses two images for our life of faith that we can well understand.

A well-rooted tree: In order for a tree to remain standing when the wind blows, it has developed a firm root system. You can’t see it, but it is usually as big as its crown. Through the roots it takes in food and water to live and grow. So we believers should also develop spiritual roots with which we can take in nourishment for our new life. When the Lord Jesus dwells in our hearts and takes up more and more space, when His love stands before us every day in a new and great way, then our faith will grow and our trust in God will increase. We are then firmly anchored in our God – even when storms come.
A firmly founded house: Whoever builds a house usually pays attention to a good foundation. So our house of life should also be founded on the love of God. In Romans 8:31–39, the Apostle Paul tells us that nothing and no one can separate us from the love of God. Whatever may come in life, God is for us. He proved His love to us when His Son died for us on the cross. In this awareness that the Lord Jesus loves us, we can begin each day trusting in Him. This is a firm foundation on which we can stand securely – especially in our changing and uncertain world.

Today’s reading: 1 Kings 9:1-9 · John 7:37-53

. He learned that God can only use subjection of Himself, weakness in self, and dependence upon Him only.
However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
