Starlight – Sunlight

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
Psalm 51:1–3

Starlight – Sunlight
An educated man in present-day Myanmar once found the biblical book of Psalms that a traveller had lost. He began to read it with interest. And although the Psalms come from a completely different time and culture, he soon realised that they speak of timeless facts: of the one God who created heaven and earth, of God’s justice and love, but also of human beings and their need for forgiveness and redemption.

Even before the man had read the booklet all the way through, he threw away his household idols to serve only the one, true God. The 51st Psalm, from which today’s Bible verses are taken, became his daily prayer.

One day he met a missionary who gave him a New Testament. With great expectation and joy, he now read the Gospels and came to know Jesus Christ as his Saviour.

The Psalms had shown him God’s willingness to forgive him and redeem him. But only through the New Testament could it become clear to him on what basis God forgives sins: through the Son of God and His vicarious suffering and death on the cross of Calvary. And because he claimed this good news for himself in faith, the finder of the Psalms then also received the certainty that God had accepted him. Overjoyed, he testified, “Until now I have walked by starlight, but now the sun has risen for me!”

Today’s reading: 1 Kings 16:29-17:6 · John 11:32-44
