Like an eagle

Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.
Psalm 55:6

Like an eagle
In today’s Psalm, David expresses in poetic language what many of us have also sighed, only in the coarser language of everyday life: “I just want to get out of here!”

How many things we experience that cause us trouble: problems at work, hardships in the family, challenges due to illness and old age, difficulties in living together with others. For some, this is part of their “daily bread”. When there is still no end in sight, we want to emigrate – as far away as possible to a place where we no longer hear or see anything about our problems. David wished for the wings of a dove to escape from all his misery.

Of course, this doesn’t solve any problems. God doesn’t hear such requests, for they are foolish. Don’t the things that trouble us come straight from Him? Aren’t the pressures from around us part of His wise plan? It is impossible to run away from the school of God.

So, is there no way out, no divine consolation? God gives us wings, not those of a dove, but those of an eagle: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). In patient trust in God, we gain strength and new courage to stand, despite difficulties, and to continue on the path of faith.

Today’s reading: 2 Kings 11:4-20 · John 21:7-14
