In a small circle the question came...

As the Lord … lives, before whom I stand …
1 Kings 17:1

In a small circle the question came up: “Can man still be expected to believe in miracles?” One doctor said very confidently, “The whole belief in miracles cannot stand up to the results of modern science.” To this, a young man objected and asked, “May I demonstrate an impromptu miracle for you so that you can see what is important in this judgment?”

He took a small ruler from the table and held it between two fingertips. “What do you think will happen if I open my fingertips? Of course, you will say: ‘Then the ruler will fall to the ground and stay there.’ Because of gravity, it must happen that way, that’s quite clear. But if the ruler stopped in the air, what then?” – “That would really be a miracle,” the doctor confirmed.

Then the young man opened his hand and dropped the ruler. Unexpectedly, however, he caught it again with his other hand. “You see,” he said, “I have shown you a miracle.” – The doctor’s face grew red. “Why, that’s cheating!” he blurted out. “Your other hand caught the ruler, didn’t it! If it had stayed free in the air, then ...”

“Thank you,” the young man replied, “for talking about the other hand. When the other hand unexpectedly went into action, it accomplished something that seemed impossible to our minds before. Gravity was overcome by another, a stronger, force!”

The other hand! If we could see it all the time, there would be no more disagreements about the miracles God does. I am one of those people who have often felt this other hand in their lives, performing countless miracles every day.

Today’s reading: 2 Kings 15:23-38 · 1 John 3:1-6
