An unexpected treasure find

The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver.

I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure.

Psalm 119:72, 162

An unexpected treasure find
A good 20 years ago, 283 old gold coins were discovered during renovation work in a house in Satillieu (Ardèche, France). With his pickaxe, a man had hit the vessel in which the coins had been hidden in the 18th century.

The discovered pieces had a total weight of 2.5 kg and showed the portraits of the kings Louis XV and Louis XVI.

One can easily imagine the great joy of the finder, who, according to the law, was entitled to half of the treasure (the other half was due to the owner of the land). To become suddenly and unexpectedly rich – that should make a person happy, right?

But greater happiness and deeper joy are possessed by all who know the Word of God and live according to it. In it, perhaps unexpectedly at first, they have found “great treasure”.

The value of this treasure is estimated by the poet of Psalm 119 as higher than “thousands of coins of gold and silver”. And the psalmists knew what they were talking about. They had a rich experience of life. Whether David or Moses, whether Asaph or the sons of Korah – their lives had led them over great heights and through many depths.

In this process, they had learned to appreciate the Word of God in its lasting value. It shows man his connection to God in heaven, to His power and to His wealth. Thus, the Bible also provides secure support and clear guidance for the ups and downs of life. Gold coins are never able to do this.

Today’s reading: 2 Kings 17:1-18 · 1 John 3:16-24

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
