The mudslide

Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep; O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
Psalm 36:6

The mudslide
Six hundred inhabitants of a mountain village in Mexico owe their lives to the attention of their animals. They had apparently sensed the approaching disaster and fled. Then the owners followed them, while the village behind them was buried under a devastating mudslide. Almost all the inhabitants managed to escape to safety.

Animals have instincts for protection given to them by the Creator. Without this flight reflex, they would be helpless in the face of many dangers. Are we humans worse off because we lack these instincts? No, God has endowed us with other abilities. We have a mind and the gift of hearing, understanding and drawing conclusions.

In the Bible, God draws our attention to the greatest and most elementary danger that threatens our lives. He tells us that we are on the road to destruction. Why? Because we are sinners. Without help we are heading for the punishment due to us because of our guilt. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

Because God wants to save us from this, He punished His Son for us. Everyone who believes in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is safe from the avalanche of divine judgment. But we must take the warning seriously and confidently use the escape route.

Today’s reading: Ezekiel 7:1-27 · Psalms 117:1-2

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
