Today's reading: Amos 1

And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
Acts 15:6-11

Thoughts in the Book of Acts(121)
Paul and Barnabas went to Jerusalem to clarify the dispute over circumcision and the law with the apostles. They related what "God had done with them"(v.4). There followed a lively discussion of the arguments for and against without prejudice or authoritative judgment: the believers were concerned to learn God's will conjointly.
The apostle Peter reminded them that God had already given clear indications, when the Roman centurion Cornelius and his household had found faith in Christ in Caesarea. God had then given them the Holy Spirit, although there had been no mention of circumcision or keeping the law
Peter drew the obvious conclusion that there could be only one way of eternal salvation both for those of the heathen world and for the Jews: the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and faith in Him.

HAZARDING LIVES FOR MISSIONS

Within the space of a few years after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel about Him had reached Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and all the great cities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
