December 20, 2015 Today's reading: Amos 8 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them. And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Acts 15:12-18 Thoughts on the Book of Acts (122) After Peter had told how God had acknowledged the faith of the Roman centurion, Cornelius, Paul and Barnabas reported how God had confirmed their preaching on their first missionary journey with signs and wonders. James, the Lord Jesus' brother and one of the leading men in the church in Jerusalem, then compared what they had heard with God's word in the Old Testament. He quoted a passage from the prophet Amos which also describes how non-Jews enter a relationship with God without circumcision or obedience to the law. James concluded that what had been reported did not contradict Holy Scripture but agreed with the prophet's words. A single passage sufficed for that observation. He knew that God's Word is perfect, forming a harmonious whole. (to be continued next Sunday) |
