Dramatic rescue (3)

Nor did their own arm save them; but it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, because You favoured them.
Psalm 44:3

Dramatic rescue (3)
At 6:20 pm, the English steamer had radioed SOS. Just 15 minutes later, the lifeboat Borkum leaves the protective harbour of the island and heads out into the storm, which has by now reached hurricane force.

Another boat rushes to the aid of the Teeswood, the salvage steamer Seefalke stationed on the Ems. It is also the first to arrive at the sinking ship, but it cannot help – it has too much draught and cannot get close enough. But as the captain of the Borkum pilots closer and then begins the rescue operation to save rescue sailors from the other ship as it is breaking apart, the Seefalke keeps its powerful spotlights focused on the disaster site, thus facilitating the life-endangering rescue operations.

The light of the salvage steamer shows the Borkum the way to carry out the rescue. How often the Word of God has placed people in the light of God! And in this light they have discovered that they were sinners and lost. But they have also realised that God has already prepared the way of salvation, and the “lifeboat” is at the ready.

Those who have allowed themselves to be saved by Jesus Christ are then shown by the light of God’s Word what a life of faith looks like. That’s why the Bible says “the law a light”, and “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Proverbs 6:23; Psalm 119:105).

(to be continued tomorrow)

Today’s reading: Hosea 8:1-14 · James 4:1-10

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
