Since the fall of the first human...

Sin is lawlessness.
1 John 3:4

Since the fall of the first human couple, the basic principles of sin have changed little. Human beings live independently of God. The consequences are complacency and insensitivity to their own wrongdoing. Many live by the precept, “Do what you like and be your own god”– an attitude that has developed new emphases and adapted its approach over the centuries.

Even in our generation, this approach to life offers something for every taste and need. But when we allow our own will to rule us, we deprive God of the place He deserves. We become guilty before Him. This is what the Bible calls sin!

We can see that sin is not only found in addicts, prostitutes or criminals – or in all those who are considered by society to have stumbled. It also hides behind culture, respectability and wealth. It likes to disguise its character in order to avoid discovery. As long as it can prevent us from having to do with God, its goal is achieved.

Sin also affects our ethics and outlook on life. It discredits faithfulness in marriage as old-fashioned and outdated, and makes relationships outside of marriage seem exciting and normal. It encourages us try every adventure – but please, leave God out of it.

One thing sin never does, however, is talk about the consequences. It will never say, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). By “death” is meant both temporal death and eternal separation from God, whose love and authority people have despised.

But thanks be to God, there is deliverance from sin and death through Jesus Christ, who

“suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God”.

1 Peter 3:18

Today’s reading: Ezra 9:5-15 · Proverbs 9:1-18

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
