Opened eyes

Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.
2 Kings 6:16

Opened eyes
Overnight, the Syrian army has surrounded the city of Dothan to capture Elisha. When the servant of the man of God wakes up in the morning, he sees the foreign army. He is frightened and cries out, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” (2 Kings 6:15). It is also the case in our lives that we can be suddenly faced with a big problem. Overnight, so to speak, we are confronted with something that frightens us and completely overwhelms us. Then we ask ourselves: What should we do now?

The first thing Elisha does is to encourage his frightened servant: “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” We also experience this in difficulties. The Lord gives us new courage by reminding us of the realities of faith through His Word: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31); “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Secondly, Elisha prays for his servant, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see” (2 Kings 6:17). God hears this request and opens the servant’s eyes. Now he sees that the mountain around Elisha is full of fiery horses and chariots. This is how the Lord wants to open our eyes of faith in our problems, so that we may recognise Him and His help. He who has all authority in heaven and on earth surrounds and protects us every day (Matthew 28:18–20).

Today’s reading: Nehemiah 13:15-31 · Proverbs 17:11-19

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
