December 23, 2015 Today's reading: Luke 1:21-38 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. Luke 19:40 With this comparison, the Lord countered the criticism of those who objected to the joyful expression of the disciples' praise. If the people who were called upon to praise Him remained silent, then God would avail Himself of other suitable means of giving His Son the praise due to Him. An angel announced the glorious news of the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. They went and saw the child and told others what they had experienced. But Jerusalem "the city of the great king" saw no cause for jubilation. There was no instant public acclamation of the advent of the Messiah; only a few faithful greeted it. But God broke the silence. He sent the Magi from an Eastern land who set out for Jerusalem, for where else might they expect the newborn King? Their inquiry caused consternation in the whole town. But they sought out the Child and paid Him homage. The Magi were astronomers. Astronomy and astrology were a single subject at that time. And here we find such men from a dubious background coming to pay homage to the King of the Jews! We do not know what they knew of the one true God. But God saw to it that His Son received the homage that His people refused Him . How fitting were the gifts that those men brought the Child: gold - symbolising divine righteousness in grace, frankincense - the sign of dedication to God, and myrrh - already an indication of His future suffering(cf. ). They had not read all this in the stars! It happened under God's guidance. And we can rejoice that God appointed this honour for the Lord, who renounced so much on our behalf. |

He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More |
