Today's reading: Luke 4:1-15

And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
Mark 4:37-38

The Lord Jesus had just dismissed the multitude, and the disciples had taken their Master into the boat "as he was". Wearied from the day's toil, He slept in the stern. He did not hide His fatigue from the eyes of His disciples: the Son of God was indeed truly Man. Nevertheless, in this humble state, He remained the Lord "who has gathered the wind in his fist...and bound the waters in a garment"(Proverbs 30:4). This was something the disciples were about to acknowledge with astonishment.
At first, they only saw their own helplessness as the violent storm arose, instead of leaving things to His divine guidance. They had taken Him into the ship "as he was", but they had hardly recognised who He was. That storm was to reveal something of His glory.
Isn't our faith something similarly put to the test? When the storm is unleashed and the waves tower up, when the trials of life storm against us, it often appears that the "ship of our life" is filling with water and sinking.
In such situations, we can only maintain our peace of mind by contemplating the greatness and glory of the Son of God. If He seems to be asleep while our concern and agitations remain, we should not forget that the wind and the waves are still just as fully under His control as when He arose and commanded them with authority to be still.
The wind abated; "there was a great calm" (v.39) That is the experience of faith.

DIVINE CHAMPION 2

Yesterday we discovered that our Lord Jesus Christ is the number one champion and that He makes His people champions. We also saw that a divine champion is a person raised up and supported by God.

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More
