During my professional career...

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven … . For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

He (God) who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Matthew 6:19–21; Romans 8:32

During my professional career, I met an expert in home appraisals. Over the years he had come into many millionaires’ homes and he told me the following story.

“One day I was working for another very rich man. A very exquisite household with many precious items kept me busy for several days. When I finally finished the appraisal, I couldn’t help but compliment him on his extraordinary possessions. Then the old gentleman – he was already well over eighty – put his hand on my shoulder, looked me earnestly in the eyes and said, ‘Young friend, at my age this is all just trinkets!’”

These words had made a great impression on the assessor, and I was also amazed by them: If the old man thought like that, why had he collected these treasures? But with increasing age, it had apparently dawned on him that the time to enjoy it all was getting shorter with each passing day, until ... hour X, when no one can take any of it with them. So he had probably become aware that material riches are completely overvalued at the threshold of eternity.

But there is a fortune, a treasure, which has no loss of value at all. This is the treasure in heaven. Everyone who has consciously chosen Jesus as their personal Saviour possesses this treasure. All who come to Him with their guilt experience forgiveness and eternal life. They are even called “children of God” and “joint heirs” of Jesus Christ.

You cannot get any richer!

Today’s reading: Genesis 21:22-34 · Psalms 4:1-8

What shall the baptized for the dead do if ...

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More
