Look, he answered, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.
Daniel 3:25

In the trial
King Nebuchadnezzar orders a statue to be erected, before which all the high officials of his kingdom must fall down and worship. Whoever refuses to obey the king will be thrown into the fiery furnace.

This command puts the faith of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego to the test. Because they believe in the living God, they cannot possibly worship this idol. When the monarch again urges them to do so, they stand firm and declare to him, “Let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up” (Daniel 3:18).

Now they are thrown into the furnace. But they do not burn; only their bindings are scorched, so they are able to walk freely in the furnace. They also experience the Lord’s presence with them in this trial. Without suffering any harm, they come out of the fire again at the king’s command.

This story shows us what the believer should to do in a trial, what the enemy can do and what God will do:

Temptation demands steadfastness and perseverance from believers so that they remain faithful to the Lord.
The enemy can only go as far in his resistance as God allows for the purification of His own.
God stands by believers in the heat of trial and provides the way out of the test.
