I was talking to a group of...

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
John 20:30–31

I was talking to a group of young people. Among them were a Muslim, a Jew, a Buddhist and several who called themselves Christians – four different religions in other words. I asked them the question, “Which religion leads to God and to eternal glory?” They looked at me questioningly, having already shared their own ideas. Now they expected me to “show my colours” as well.

“None at all!” was my answer: “No religion can lead us to God.” Of course, I had to explain this to them. Religious ceremonies and forms, religious doctrines and moral precepts cannot lead us to God. Trying to reach heaven in this way would mean trying to find God by our own strength and to stand before Him in our own righteousness.

Because we are sinners and as such can never stand before God, we are dependent on God’s grace. God Himself has made a way for us to come to Him – through His Son Jesus Christ. Therefore, the Christian faith in its original, biblical sense is not faith in a religion, but faith in a person – faith in Jesus, the only mediator between God and men, who gave Himself as a ransom for all (1 Timothy 2:5–6).

By way of explanation, I added, “This happened at the cross where the Lord Jesus was under the judgment of God for our sins. For 30 years now I have been privileged to believe in Him as my personal Saviour. You need Him too.” The young people listened with interest, getting an impression of how personal the Christian faith is. They wanted to think about it further.

Today’s reading: Genesis 49:1-18 · Psalms 35:11-18

The Lord searches every heart and understands every motive'
1 Chronicles 28:9

The Psalmist prayed, Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting' (Psalms 139:23-24 NKJV). If you're wise you'll...More

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
