Three pointers for the prayer meeting

Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church.
Acts 12:5

Three pointers for the prayer meeting
While Peter was in prison, the assembly in Jerusalem prayed constantly to God for him. From this we can learn some things for our times of prayer together:

– Those gathered prayed to God. They didn’t go to people with their need. They didn’t become politically active to dissuade King Herod from his evil plans. No, they brought their concern to God. Of course, we can also make requests to people. But praying is much more worthwhile: we then turn to God in faith and trust in His love, wisdom and omnipotence. Nothing is impossible for Him!

– Those gathered prayed continually. They brought their request before God again and again – persistently, eagerly and fervently. The Lord Jesus had already pointed this out: “Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1). And James tells us that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16). If this is true for an individual, how much more for the prayer of the assembly!

– Those gathered prayed for Peter. They had a specific request that they addressed to God. Likewise we shouldn’t preach to the Lord on our knees but we should pray specifically for people who have needs and problems. How many requests there are! Moreover, the congregation can more easily say “Amen” to a concrete request or a clearly expressed thanksgiving.

Today’s reading: Daniel 3:19-30 · Psalms 39:7-13

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
