Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!
Luke 18:38

This was the desperate cry of a blind beggar at the gates of Jericho, one of the oldest cities in the world. He cried out so loudly for help that the crowds following Jesus Christ reacted angrily. But the man felt this was his last chance. In fact, Jesus never passed by there again: a short time later, He was crucified in Jerusalem. It’s good to remember that you must seize the opportunity to make contact with Jesus Christ. It could be the last one you have.

What could a blind man, and a beggar at that, accomplish against the many people who surrounded Jesus and were in full possession of their sight? That was precisely what the blind man wanted: to be able to see like the others. It is touching that despite his lack of sight he had not lost his inner vision for what is right. In this way he was ahead of many a sighted person in the crowd.

If you read the Bible text carefully, you will quickly notice that the beggar, and only he, had grasped who Jesus really was. For the others, He was no more than Jesus of Nazareth – that is, at best, a miraculous and somewhat remarkable personality. But such an opinion does nothing – not then and not today.

The blind man had something over the others. He had believed the news that Jesus Christ was the Son of David and thus the promised Redeemer, of whom the Old Testament had foretold so much. This Jesus could help and, more than that, He could save him!

This is what matters: that each person allows the eyes of their heart to be opened to their own need for salvation, and to the Saviour Jesus Christ – and ultimately to the abundant life that He gives.

Today’s reading: Daniel 6:19-28 · Acts 1:15-26
