Increasing love

And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment.
Philippians 1:9

Increasing love
How can the prayer expressed by the Apostle Paul in today’s verse become a reality in our lives? How can my love and yours increase while at the same time being accompanied by knowledge and understanding?

We find a first answer in 1 John 4:19, “We love Him because He first loved us.” The more we occupy ourselves with God’s love for us, the greater will become our love for Him, for all believers and for our fellow human beings.

– When we remember that God did not spare His Son, but gave Him to die for us, we find it easier to obey Him out of love.

– When we realise how much God loves our fellow believers and how much they mean to Him, we too want to love them in truth and in practice.

– When we are truly aware of God’s love for the lost, we are deeply concerned about the salvation of our fellow human beings. Out of love we try to win them for the Saviour.

A second answer is given by 1 Corinthians 13:6, love “rejoices in the truth”. Our love should always be in agreement with the thoughts of God. When we know biblical truth and properly apply it in our daily lives, our love is connected to knowledge and understanding. Then, in each situation, we ask ourselves how we can better please God and the Lord Jesus through active love.

Today’s reading: Job 1:13-22 · Acts 5:12-24

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
