God’s standard

They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good.
Psalm 14:1

God’s standard
Our judgment of good and evil is determined by society’s fluctuating values and personal inclinations. We are outraged by some wickedness, while we trivialise other transgressions.

Our Creator, on the other hand, has established a standard of good and evil that is unchangingly valid. In the Ten Commandments we find His requirements for us (Exodus 20:1–17). The only problem is that we don’t keep them. Every human being has already transgressed these commandments countless times: stealing something here, telling a little lie there, disrespecting our parents, envying our fellow human beings, etc. When we stand before God in this way, He has to condemn us.

Because we cannot stand before Him, we need deliverance from our guilt. Who is able to help us there? Only One can deliver us from the just punishment, and that is the One who is Himself innocent. In 1 Peter 3:18 we read, “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.” On the cross He suffered as the substitute in place of others.

So, our salvation is an undeserved gift from God that we can accept. We only have to realise that we are dependent on the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus for of our sins. This personal faith in the Redeemer brings us into a right relationship with God.

Today’s reading: Job 4:1-21 · Acts 6:1-15

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
