Two visits to the doctor (1)

And Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done … and how the Lord had delivered them.
Exodus 18:8

Two visits to the doctor (1)
The man sitting across from me on the train kept humming an old hymn. Finally I asked him why this song was important to him. That’s when he told me his story.

“I used to work on a big farm. My boss was a Christian and treated us well. He was always explaining the gospel to us and telling us that we needed to repent and be converted. Many of my friends did – but I didn’t. I didn’t have anything against it and even recognised the necessity of it, but I didn’t want to change my life – at least not yet.

Then I fell ill. I struggled through the day and couldn’t get my work done. Eventually, my boss noticed. He sent for me and said: ‘Tom, you’re going to ride to the doctor now and have a thorough check-up. And then you’ll tell me what he said.’

The next morning I rode into town. I didn’t hurry. So many things were going through my mind. I imagined that the doctor might say, ‘Young man, you don’t have long to live.’ Then I would want to believe in God. But what kind of faith would that be, based solely on the fear of death! If, however, he said, ‘Young man, you’ll be better in a few weeks,’ then I would continue to wait. I realised that the only right and honest thing to do would be to make up my mind before going to the doctor.

My thought became action: I got off the horse and knelt down, confessing my sins to God, and asking Him to forgive me, and also asking Him to help me change my life.”

What would you have done?

(to be concluded tomorrow)

Today’s reading: Job 23:1-24:12 · Acts 13:13-22

One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liarsThis testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith.

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
